About the institute

The Government Institute of Fashion Designing (GIFD) at Mankada is a government vocational training centre in Malappuram district, listed by the Directorate of Technical Education with an establishment year of 1974. It works under the guidance and control of Government Polytechnic College, Perinthalmanna, and was earlier known here as the TGMT Centre.

It is one of 42 government GIFDs in Kerala. These centres come under the Department of Technical Education, and their administrative authority is vested in the district panchayats. Their purpose is to train skilled people in garment making, ornamentation, design and marketing.

The programme

The institute teaches one programme: the two-year Kerala Government Technical Examinations (KGTE) certificate in Fashion Designing & Garment Technology (FDGT). It combines traditional garment making with computer-aided fashion design, a six-week industry internship, personality development and English and workplace skills. The curriculum was last revised in 2017.

Teaching is in Malayalam, except for English and workplace skills. The Controller of Technical Examinations holds a common examination at the end of each year, and students who pass both receive the KGTE certificate.

How selection works

The prospectus describes no entrance test. The rank list is based on your SSLC or equivalent grades: your grade points are added up and divided by the number of subjects to give an average. Applicants are ranked by that average, subject to the reservation rules.

If two applicants tie, the higher grade point in English goes first, and after that the older applicant. Marks from older schemes are converted to grade points like this:

GradeMarksGrade points
A+90 and above9
A80 and above8
B+70 and above7
B60 and above6
C+50 and above5
C40 and above4
D+30 and above3

The allotment and rank list are published at the institute and can be checked online. Allotted students must come on the given day with a parent or guardian. Anyone who does not attend on that day is not considered later.
