Government Polytechnic College, Perinthalmanna works with industry so that students learn in real workplaces and employers meet well-prepared diploma holders. That work follows the policy of the Directorate of Technical Education (DTE), Kerala, the State Institute of Technical Teachers Training and Research (SITTTR) and the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).
This page explains those rules in plain language, for students planning an internship and for companies that want to work with us. The official documents are linked at the end of the page, and they prevail over this summary.

One cell for every industry link
In 2024, DTE Kerala asked each institute to bring its industry-related activity under an Industry Institute Interaction Cell (IIIC). Faculty and students can then see what is happening on campus, collaborate across departments and avoid repeating work.
- IEDC cells
- YIP cells
- ICT&SR
- Continuing Education (CCE)
- Industry on Campus (IOC)
- Professional clubs: IEEE, ASCE, ASME
- Who leads it
- A faculty member at Lecturer level holds charge of the cell in a Government Polytechnic.
- How it reports
- The coordinator reports to the Principal every quarter, and the data goes to the IIIC office at DTE.
- How it works with others
- Cells at different institutes share knowledge and resources, and avoid duplicating work.
- What it does not do
- It consolidates activities and outcomes. It does not control the centres, which keep working to their own mandate.
For students
The sixth-semester internship
Under the Revision 2021 scheme, eligible students can spend Semester 6 working in industry. It is a separate pathway from regular study, so read the rules before you opt in.
Get oriented in Semester 5
The college runs a one-day mandatory workshop on the internship, and each programme has its own Internship Coordinator.
Choose and apply
Pick up to three companies in your discipline from the SITTTR list, and submit a separate application for each to your Internship Coordinator.
Clear the college checks
The coordinator verifies your application and passes it to the Head of Department. After consulting the Placement Officer, the HoD sends it to the Principal for final approval.
Get selected
Companies may hold tests or interviews, and the final decision is theirs. All contact with companies goes through the Placement Officer. Students may not contact them directly.
Work for one full semester
Keep your daily log book and follow company attendance rules, with one casual leave a month. Your coordinator reviews progress with your supervisor at least monthly. Two weeks of institutional classes are included.
Complete your assessment
Finish Entrepreneurship and Startups, Indian Constitution and two Programme Core courses at the college, and submit your Internship Report.

Before you opt in
- You have two weeks to change your mind. You may return to the regular pathway within two weeks of Semester 6 starting. Attendance in that period is marked absent. No switch is allowed after that.
- Your company is final. You cannot change your allotted company once your placement is confirmed.
- An unfinished internship cannot be repeated. If you do not complete the internship and its evaluation, you must seek readmission to Semester 6 in the next academic cycle.
- Your diploma stays the same. Both pathways carry equal credits, and diploma certificates make no distinction between them.

Earn while you learn
Industry on Campus
Set up by the Government of Kerala in 2021 (G.O.(Ms) No. 257/2021/HEDN), Industry on Campus brings real production work into polytechnic labs and workshops, so students apply theory, earn, and learn how a business runs. An institute needs DTE approval to start IOC activity.
Micro Production Unit
The first level of an on-campus production activity.
Mini Production Centre
A larger centre built on the institution's lab and workshop facilities.
Independent Production House
The highest level, running as a production centre in its own right.
How a project runs
Bring a proposal
Companies and faculty route every proposal through the Institute IOC Coordinator.
Institute review
The Institute IOC Committee reviews it with the faculty coordinator and the company's representative.
DTE approval
The approved proposal goes to DTE with a tripartite MoU on stamp paper, signed by the Principal, the company and DTE.
Do the work
Students from all branches can take part, after giving written consent to follow the project rules.
Close and certify
A project report, completion certificate and utilisation certificate go to DTE. Students receive a certificate of skills signed by the Director and the company.
Where project revenue goes
The largest share goes to the students who do the work.
- Students on the project40%
- Institution Development Fund25%
- Faculty project coordinator20%
- Institute's project expenses10%

National framework
AICTE internship guidelines
AICTE's model framework for three-year diploma programmes sets out about 450 to 500 hours of internship and related activity. One credit equals at least 40 to 45 hours of work. In Kerala, the State rules above govern the sixth-semester pathway.

| After Semester 2 | Inter or intra-institutional activities, such as soft-skills training, workshops and lab work | 3 to 4 weeks |
| After Semester 4 | Internship in industry, government, an NGO, an MSME or a rural setting, or innovation and entrepreneurship work | 4 to 6 weeks |
| Semester 6 | Internship, or innovation and entrepreneurship work | 3 to 4 weeks |
