Brief History

Government Polytechnic College, Perinthalmanna was established in 1961 under the Directorate of Technical Education, Government of Kerala, with a vision of empowering people through good quality technical education. It began with three-year diploma courses in Civil, Mechanical and Electrical engineering. The Electronics Engineering department was added in 1987.

The college is approved by the AICTE, New Delhi. It stands at Angadippuram in Perinthalmanna Taluk, Malappuram District, near the Angadippuram railway station, on 8.73 hectares (21.57 acres) of green campus.

Alongside the regular programmes, the college has added courses and schemes for people outside the usual diploma route:

• Community Development through Polytechnic (CDTP): free vocational training and technical skills for young people who could not continue formal education, delivered through sub centres. It began in 1978 as the Community Polytechnic Scheme.
• Continuing Education Cell: a sub centre of Continuing Education Kerala since 2001.
• Evening Polytechnic: started in all branches in 2012-13.
• Community College: started in 2015 to award vocational diplomas.
• Government Institute of Fashion Designing, Mankada: an institute of the Technical Education Department that works under this college.

The AICTE Tuition Fee Waiver scheme runs here, and SC/ST students receive the Lump Sum Grant stipend from the SC/ST Development Department. An anti-ragging committee and a departmental committee in each discipline look after student concerns, and an Institution Project Implementation Unit works on the development of the campus.

What students need today may be out of date tomorrow. The college plans by studying the shortcomings of the present, so that its technical education keeps pace with the needs and hopes of the next generation.
